Abandoned words- Imayam Translated by Kavitha Muralidharan

I started reading poems, short stories, novels, and essays in 1984. In 1987, I wrote my first novel Beasts of Burden (Koveru Kazhuthaigal). It was published as a book in 1994. After Beasts of Burden, I have written five novels, six short story collections, and a long story. It is slightly on the higher side. I have not sought the support of any institution, organization, or group for the novels, short story collections, or long stories I have written until now. I abandon the short story or the novel once I send them to print. If they can, let them survive. I abandon them after cursing them - If my short stories or novels are not effective, let them die. Plants, creepers, and trees survive on the strength of their roots – don’t they?

A writer is like a tailor. He is merely an assistant in joining and weaving the words together in the right way. When I write, I see my identity in my words. When I write a short story or a novel, I strongly believe I was born to write it.

When I complete a short story with a climax and an end, when I complete a novel with a climax and an end, I don’t really write the end or the climax. It is the beginning of another short story or a novel. The end of the work takes a backseat. The vortex of the words. Each desire leads to another, new one. Each question leads to a new one. Self-centered writing is not literature. Writing is the attainment of wisdom. Is there a victory or defeat in the attainment of wisdom? What is the distance between victory and defeat? I don’t know. A writer is not a preacher. He is not a theologian. He discovers words. Reading and writing lead to the pursuit of peace. I abandon my words in rock-like peace. They abandon me too. Literature is not just holding hands; abandonment is also literature. You smile during an act of forgiveness. Smiling makes forgiving possible. The merit of literature is just this. Not creating mutts or becoming the heads of mutts.

I learned this from what I read and write.
